25. * Innovative Bridge Designs / Creations ! *

Kia Ora!

As you know, it’s Wednesday!– Well Engineering time for the year 8’s and 7’s.

It was settled out in the hall where we experienced various activities which came in the category of Civil Engineering! It was enjoyable, especially working together as a team with my friends. There, was where Ruth had presented herself and talked us through about Civil Engineering. She’s a retired teacher (I Guess) who ran the engineering day 2 class.

We started our time off with a challenge–using Jenga Blocks and seeing who could build the tallest tower compared to other groups.–There were a time limit of 3 minutes, seeing who could build an practical skyscraper! My group’s tower was not that stable. It was precarious which made the tension strong enough to knock the tower over. I had the bright idea to use the Jenga tin (there were no rules!) so we did so and others mirrored our actions. Frankly, I had tons of fun overall! Here’s what it looks like if you can’t really imagine it.

After that activity, we had another task to build a bridge. With just cardboard, the help of scissors, along with tape! It was simple really. As a group, we’ve combined our ideas together and looked up at the TV which had different types of bridges on it– which gave us the idea to combine the Arched Bridge and Cable-Stayed Bridge. I thought the idea and design seemed uniquely awesome, my group can definitely agree on that. I agree that we all have different but creative ideas.

Hereby is what our architect look like!

It can hold a Chromebook, you know. That proves how strong it is. Relying on the tension, and mainly support on the bottom, it’s a stabilized and safe bridge. Imagine it 100x the size! It’ll be able to hold heavy construction trucks, buses, you name it. Possibly a tank too.

This day might just be the best of the week, I enjoyed it because we got to do different things in a team, working together which gave me the cognitive enchantment.

Thank you for reading, Bye!

25. Leadership

Kia Orana.

WALT:

LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

Leading by example plays an outstanding character if you’re a year 7/8 – saying there, is that we (the senior seniors of Edmund Hillary School) are responsible to act as a role-model and inspire our peers, younger ones, and elders, to be astonished by our perfect behaviour. We, the seniors, tend to try to put up a great observation towards our school to be elected as a significant community, whether we’re out of the school or in. We work on being co-operative as seniors to show Respect and Rangatiratanga together so we could all simultaneously do something sensible whether we’re asked to or not. The reason for what i’ve just briefly explained, is because we want to be worthy and an eye-catching-first class to others who are unbeknownst or known-st to our Marae. In addition, we also just want to be safe within each other, and have trust – so we could spread that awareness of trustworthy people to everyone globally.

On Monday this week, Whaea Lorraine (Room 9’s Teacher) directly asked the whole of Year 8’s for a piece of  paper/digital document of an explanation about how we (the year 8’s) want our reputation to represent as.  It didn’t have to be short nor long – the amount of paragraphs was up to the person inscribing it (so the Year 8’s, of course).

if you didn’t quite comprehend what I was implying there, what I was indicating was that the year 8’s had to write a paragraph of how they want their reputation to be like to the Juniors, elders, peers, and everyone in general. We had this week’s Monday to finish off our homework and it was due to Tuesday. For some purpose, some other students didn’t really complete their work so they have until next week Monday morning to share it. Besides that point, here is an example of the form of writing that I did that Whaea Lorraine was looking forward to;

”I hope my reputation reflects that I strive to set a positive example, whether it’s through hard work, determination, or kindness. I want the years 1 through 7, along with the teachers, to notice that I intend to lead by example, showing that leadership is not just about authority, but also about motivating others to be their best-selves. The same goes for myself, I want to be the best I could do with no force nor pressure.”

That was half of the segment that I’ve recently written and added to my Google Document – about how I want my reputation to display as a future-responsible year 8.

For instance, hereby is my Homework writing of how want MY reputation to set as a senior.

25. How I would appreciate my reputation to be like

If you pressed it, you could see that my one page work exhibited right upon you. Please inform me down the comment sections below if you have access to the link I connected in my post.

(If you want – Please add in your comment of how I did this post, I need constructive criticism to improve my grammar and punctuation. Overall, thank you for your time and reading my post, God bless and this is the end of my explanation.)

24. STEAM Launch

Kia Ora.

On Tuesday this week, room 9 and 11 were settled in the Hall to do a science experiment. There were some white plastic bags scattered all over the floor that included the same material, such as: Two each of A2 Newspaper, 2 paper straws, 1 plastic straw, also having a roll of cello tape, scissors, 2 meters of string, a rectangle piece of cardboard, polyester, and a circle shaped foam. They all sorted into their groups that had four people per group. Some groups are expected to have at least one engineer in them, but a few didn’t. My group had an engineer in it which made our group a lot better. Even without an engineer, we’d probably still manage.

Anyways Whaea Peta explained what we have to do, and what we have to use the materials for. Our task was to use those materials to protect a boiled egg from breaking by dropping it from the second floor in the Hall.

My idea of protecting the egg was to create a parachute for it, but it seems that my group disagreed. Which wasn’t a good idea. Because when I made the parachute, they decided to change it into something else. If you’re keen on knowing how I made the parachute, I used tape to attach the A2 paper together but bending it to create a pocket for the egg to settle in. I also added straws to the top corner of my pocket so the white plastic bag (the one that had the materials in it) can act like the parachute and pick up the air through it as it’s falling. We tried protecting the egg by adding polyester under the egg and to help hold the polyester up, we added foam underneath and then wrapped the A2 newspaper around x2 before stupidly adding cardboard around the egg thinking that its going to be ‘Extra’ secure (don’t worry, we did add tape to hold it up.) Lastly, we added the white plastic bag so the egg doesn’t crack when it hits the ground. Our hypothesis; we all bet that our egg would survive falling about 9ft or 10(? we’re not sure how far our egg has dropped from the second floor)

When one of my buddies went upstairs to the top floor in the Hall, she was ready to drop the egg. Whaea Peta was counting down from 3, as Tanya took pictures for us to look back on. Here’s the picture of my buddy holding up our invention… and when she dropped it. (The person on the right)

Later on when every group had a turn dropping their tests, Peta and Tanya opened up the eggs that were now on the floor to check if it cracked or not. A few openings later, Tanya found our egg and opened it; and it turns out that our egg.. cracked.

When we heard the news, we were disappointed. Next time we could do better.

STEAM. Meaning Science, Technology, Engineering, Art(s), and Mathematics.

For science, we did the planning, for technology we ‘protected’ the egg. For engineering, we connected the pieces together, including arts, we eye’ed the design, and finally, for maths, we calculated whether our egg is going to break or not – by looking at how high the second floor is to the first.

I hope you understood my explanation, bye!
